Explorer Scouts

Explorer Scouts is the fifth section in Scouting. The core age range is from 14 years to 18 years old. The age for moving from the Scout Section is between 13½ and 14½ years.

There are three options for 14-18 year olds within the district:

  1. Attend Derwentside Explorer Scout Unit

  2. Attend Derwentside Explorer Scout Unit and be a Derwentside Explorer Scout Young Leader and attend termly Explorer Scout Young Leader meetings and training

  3. Be a Derwentside Explorer Scout Young Leader and attend termly Explorer Scout Young Leader meetings and training

Activities

Explorer Scouts work towards three main Scout Awards – the Chief Scout Gold Award, Chief Scout Platinum Award and the King’s Scout Award. All of these awards correspond with the three Duke of Edinburgh’s Awards, with the scout awards being set at a slightly higher standard, allowing young people to complete both at the same time.

It's more fun, bigger challenges and adventure on a whole new level for over 14s in the District. Explorers have the chance to put something back into scouting or experience new, bolder adventures. Explorer Scouting is designed to be flexible around the young people and with them at the helm of their own adventure - it offers a huge amount of choice too!

Badges

Master something you love, or try something shiny and new. If it spurs you on or stirs your interest, we’ve probably got a badge for it. Click below to check out all 40 badges available.

As an Explorer, there are more chances to achieve than ever before, as a whole new range of Top Awards are introduced. Explorer Scouts can work towards as many awards as they like, at their own pace.

Uniform

Explorer Scouts wear a beige shirt or blouse with their badges sewn on, navy trousers and a Unit necker.
