All adults who help in Scouting in Derwentside are volunteers, who help because they find it to be extremely rewarding and because they enjoy it.
There are many different ways in which you can help in Scouting. The uniformed Leaders form only a small part of the adult volunteer team. Treasurers, secretaries, group managers, cleaners and caretakers are just some of the essential “behind the scenes” roles which allow leaders to get on with what they do best - providing challenging and exciting programmes for the young people.

Helpers / Section Assistants
People who can help occasionally, or every week, assisting the Leaders to run the programme. Help with a badge or help with camps and activities.
Leaders
The backbone of the volunteers. Responsible for organising and running an exciting programme and activities for the young people.
Scout Fellowship
For people over 18 years old who want to be part of scouting, but do not want to be committed to helping one group, and who also want the social activities offered by the Scout Fellowship. See the Scout Fellowship pages for more information.
All adult roles in Scouting are subject to CRB clearance and Scout Headquarters check. Prior Scouting experience is NOT required for any role. A comprehensive training system is in place to help and support adults.
Roles working with the Young People
Group Scout Leaders / Managers
Responsible for ensuring the smooth and effective running of the Scout Group. This does not need to be a uniformed role and no prior Scouting experience is needed.
Other Opportunities
Scout Groups also need people to help with maintaining headquarters, painting, cutting grass, or helping on management committees as chairpersons, treasurers, secretaries or fund raisers.
Chairpersons, treasurers, secretaries, committee members:- There is always a demand for adults who can spare a few hours a month to help with administration and ensure the group runs effectively. All groups have management committees which meet between once a month to once a quarter.
General maintenance:- Most groups in Derwentside have their own headquarters. Adults who can make a regular or occasional commitment to go in and clean, carry out minor repairs or cut grass are always welcome.
