Most Groups charge a weekly subscription (‘subs’) to cover the costs of equipment and the upkeep of headquarters. Subs varies from Group to Group, but is usually £1 to £2 per week. This also covers the Scout Association’s annual membership fee, which includes a basic personal accident insurance for all members. Please ask a leader if you require details of the Scout Insurance.
An extra charge is normally required for special events, camps, and other activities and outings.
In addition to weekly subs, you may need to buy a uniform when your son or daughter joins. Uniforms cost from £9.50 for Beaver Scout sweatshirts, to £43 for an Explorer Scout Shirt and Activity Trousers. However, most Groups have a supply of uniforms which have been donated by members who have moved into the next section, which they lend out to members who need them. There are also grants available to help parents pay for uniforms. Ask your section leader for details. Please do not be put off by the price of the uniform. If you need assistance buying a uniform just ask a leader. Cost should NEVER be a barrier to anyone joining Scouts!
More information on what uniform you need and where to buy it can be found by clicking on the uniforms link on the left.
Gift Aid
Most Groups operate the Gift Aid Scheme. If you pay tax, they can use Gift Aid to claim 28p for every £1.00 you give in subs or donations back from the Inland Revenue. All you need to do is sign a Gift Aid Declaration All the money will be used to benefit members of the Scout Group and helps keep the cost to parents lower.
