About us

Derwentside District Scout Council is a registered charity which provides CHALLENGE and ADVENTURE to young people aged 6 to 25 years in the north west of County Durham.

There are six Scout Groups in the district, which each operate three sections and run activities for children aged 6 to 14. For the 14 to 18 year olds there is a district Explorer Scout Unit, and there is also a Scout Network unit for 18 to 25 year olds.

All sections work towards a progressive training scheme, around the themes of Outdoor and Adventure, Community, Fitness, Creative, Global and Beliefs and Attitudes.

They also have the opportunity to gain activity badges and Challenge badges, as well as the prestigious Chief Scout Awards. For the older members there is also the opportunity to complete the Duke of Edinburgh Awards.

Adventure – at all levels and in many forms – is the ‘essence’ of Scouting. Rather than just extreme sports, it encompasses the many ways that Scouting challenges and stretches young people. For a Beaver Scout, waking up the morning after their first night away from home is as much an adventure as a Member of the Scout Network hang-gliding or scuba diving.
